Continuing Education | your doorway to academic excellence

Program Details

What is the Sustainable Business program experience?

It’s not your average college course.

This experience is not a “sage on the stage” faculty-led monologue. Instead, it is led by an engaging man who also happens to be a professor, economist, researcher, Managing Director for the Gund Institute and president-elect of the U.S. Society for Ecological Economics – Jon Erickson.

Every day of the program includes speakers and presenters from various UVM departments and Vermont or regional businesses. Site visits are organized to help participants see first-hand sustainability in practice.

The Sustainable Business program offers a Professional Certificate for participants who complete the modest pre-work reading, attend all five days on campus and engage with the faculty and peers with case study work. The program is also available for college credit – 3 credits in just one week – to launch or enhance a master’s degree with a sustainability concentration.

This interdisciplinary program integrates the expertise of many different University of Vermont academic units, including Gund Institute for Ecological Economics, Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, School of Business Administration, Continuing Education, and the Vermont Business Center.

This program is designed for professionals and graduate students. Adults with working experience to share in peer-to-peer learning facilitated by University of Vermont faculty and professional presenters. You will:

  • Network with other individuals who are committed to applying state-of-the-art knowledge in their organizations and businesses;
  • Work in teams on “living case studies” — two projects actually being implemented at leading sustainable businesses;
  • Convene on the University of Vermont campus, offering sustainable choices for housing and dining and access to the natural wonders of our state;
  • Gain the tools and credentials to transform your business or career.
