Gerontology Certificate: Study of Aging

The so-called “graying of America” over the next few decades will create extensive employment opportunities. Americans over 65 currently comprise 12 percent of the population; by 2030, they will make up 20 percent. Many more professionals will be needed to serve this population and understand their impact on American culture overall.

What Is Gerontology?

Gerontology is the multi-disciplinary study of aging across the life span, including physical, mental, social and spiritual changes in people as they age. Professionals from diverse fields who have studied aging are known as Gerontologists. They differ from Geriatricians who are trained to understand and treat illness and disease of elders.

Overview of the Field and its Opportunities

A burgeoning population of senior citizens creates daunting economic, social and political challenges for our society. Health care and associated costs are a primary concern as are policy issues around Social Security, Medicare and other “safety-net” programs. And not only is the number of senior citizens growing, but they are living longer than ever before.

All of these changes give rise to almost limitless employment opportunities. In addition to Health Care services, demand is emerging for “elder” expertise in Housing, Financial and Legal services, Leisure, Travel, Hospitality, Architecture, Transportation, Social Policy and Fitness/Wellness pursuits.
