Celebrating Herbs: From Garden to Kitchen

Explore the magical world of fresh herbs. Learn the basics of growing herbs and creative ways to use them in your cooking. This course will introduce you to unfamiliar herbs like lemon verbena and lovage, and show you new ways to use familiar herbs, such as basil and rosemary. You will learn how to keep herb plants healthy both in the garden and in containers, as well as tips for preserving herbs. There will be a gardening component and a hands-on cooking component to each class. Recipes have been developed and carefully tested by instructor Patsy Jamieson. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and shoes with closed toes. Aprons are provided. We suggest that students bring food storage containers to take home leftovers.
Adaptation: From Novel to Screenplay

Carole will introduce the class to the short novel The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain, and will follow this with a reading of two different versions adapted from the novella by David Mamet and a screening of the 1980 film with Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange, directed by Bob Rafelson. Afterwards, the class will read aloud from the novella and screenplays, and then watch clips from the film to see how the director changed the themes and characters from the novel and the screenplays. Join us for this interactive workshop!
Rediscovering Your Bike: All About Getting Around Town by Bicycle

This hands-on course is designed to teach bicycle-handling skills. It consists of classroom instruction, on-bicycle parking lot drills, and bicycling on roadways. This League of American Bicyclists course will give cyclists the confidence they need to ride safely and legally in traffic. It is designed for both experienced riders and beginners. A bicycle, helmet, and pre-registration are required. Specific topics include:

Social networking has become a regular part of our day-to-day lives, but it can be intimidating if you don't know how to use the tools. Would you like to know more about social networking and how online communities such as Facebook, Twitter, and blogs work? In addition to being able to connect online with your families and friends, social networking can help you meet and stay in touch regularly with people from around the world. This course will help you understand how to safely navigate these social networking sites, teach you the accepted social networking protocols, and help you become more comfortable communicating online. Specific topics include:
- Introduction to Facebook, setting security, and connecting with people and groups
- Q&A about Facebook hands-on creation of posts, posting photographs, and etiquette
- The rules of Twitter, how to tweet, discussion of how to useTwitter
- The rules of LinkedIn and a discussion of why is it a professional network and how can you use it
Websites for Beginners

If you have an interest in computer programs and a flair for creativity or have thought about making your own website for personal or business purposes, then this workshop is for you! You will learn the basic elements of how to develop a website, from conception to completion. Specific topics include:
- Overview of domain names and web servers; discussion about the purpose of websites and how to best present information. Students will have the opportunity to present a website that they like to the class and discuss what makes for a good design. Each student will have time to register a domain name if they chose to.
- Explanation of different ways to build websites. Overview of Wordpress and Weebly and help students determine which option is best for them.
- How to work in Wordpress and Weebly, install a theme, and make some simple changes.
- Styling your website, making specific changes. About photos and photo editors. Present website to classmates and teach each other what they learned in the process.
Plein Air - Outdoor Watercolor Class

This is the perfect painting class for summertime! Students will practice painting skies, hills and trees, and creating the feeling of space. Classes will take place outdoors, weather permitting. Students should be comfortable with their drawing skills and have some previous experience with watercolor. A list of essential supplies to bring will be provided by the instructor.
Psychics, Extraterrestrials & Our Place in the Universe

Are you new to digital photography, or have you been using a digital camera and want to know more about how to take advantage of all its features? This course covers the basic rules of photography and helps you familiarize yourself with the equipment so that you can improve your photography skills. You will learn about f-stop/aperture, shutter speed, exposure, light, and the automatic and manual settings that you find on your camera. In addition, you'll have the opportunity to share photographs that you take during class and learn to develop an analytical eye to help you take stunning photos. Bring your digital camera! Science Fiction & Religion

Space travel, futuristic societies, and the social impacts of new technologies are common themes in science fiction. A more surprising theme that has been explored since 1926 is that of religion (its nature, social function, and the tensions between religion and science) in science fiction. In this class, students will sample the ways in which religion is portrayed in 20thcentury science fiction. No previous familiarity with the genre or religion studies is necessary. Specific topics include:

In Dreams: Gothic Cinema and the Moment of Collapse

In this single session, the class will watch Irish filmmaker Neil Jordan’s film In Dreams (1999), in which a woman is committed to a mental facility for insisting her mind is linked to that of the killer who kidnapped and murdered her daughter. Following the screening, the class will discuss the various ways in which Gothic elements are used throughout the film.
Beginning Yoga

This class serves as an introduction to yoga and is specifically designed for beginners over age 50. Taught in a gentle and light-hearted way, it is easily accessible to any level of fitness. The four-class series introduces participants to the basics of yoga, including the physical practice (asana), the breathing practices (pranayama), and meditation. The physical practice will focus on enhancing flexibility, strength, and balance in a supportive environment. Participants should wear loose but fitted clothes and provide their own yoga mat.
Getting the Most Out of Your Mac

Macintosh computers include a wide variety of free software to help you manage your calendar, music, photos, contact lists, email, and browse the web. In this class, you will learn the basics of how to configure and interact with Mac OS X along with some handy hints to help you increase your understanding of the computer. We will also look at the basics of some of the major applications that come free with Max OS X, including Mail, Safari, Address Book, iPhoto, and iTunes. There will be time at the end to address specific questions which may arise. Bring your laptop! Specific topics include:

The Business of Independent Film: Documentary

How often have you said "that idea (situation, event, history, relationship) would make a great film!" Do you know someone whose life should be on the big or small screen? With today's evermore accessible technology, making a film and finding an audience is possible for anyone with a digital camera and an idea. But to be successful takes planning and knowledge of the resources available to bring your project from concept to reality. While no prior filmmaking experience is required, former film students trying to break into the field, as well as experienced filmmakers may find this course particularly useful. Determining your audience, developing the idea, writing the treatment, budgets, funding, proposal writing, pitching your project, contract negotiation, fair use, marketing, and distribution will all be covered in a lively, interactive environment. Kayaking

Try a new water sport this summer, or improve your kayaking skills with other OLLI members! Includes two hours of instruction, all equipment, and another hour to paddle on your own. The class is taught in recreational kayaks, which offer the stability that new paddlers need. You will learn about carrying kayaks, launching and getting out of your kayaks, basic paddling strokes and maneuvering your craft. This is a great way to jump start your paddling, or to help prepare you for more in-depth classes such as Sea Kayaking Essentials or Rolling and Rescue. Our ACA certified instructors will teach you how to get the most from your kayak.

This two-part course will cover topics, in chronological history, in the field of Jewish Intellectual History. The first three hours will be divided into three sessions, starting with the scriptural heritage (Torah, Talmud, Jewish Presence in Classical Europe)and running through the late Middle Ages(Jewish thought in Christian and Muslim Europe as an extension of Jewish tradition and in the light of Aristotelian thought). The second three hours will cover the Jewish intellectual presence in Early Modern Europe, starting with the Renaissance and running through the Jewish divisions into traditional and liberal wings in the 19th Century as well as Marx, Einstein, Freud, and Deconstructionism in the 20th century.

Pickleball

Pickleball has arrived in the northeast! Come learn the basics of a sport which provides fun and exercise, all in good company. The court is shorter than a tennis court, the paddle is shorter than a tennis racquet, and the ball is hollow plastic. This course will be taught by members of Pickeball Vermont in the Burlington area. All equipment will be provided. Please wear sneakers with non-marking soles. Specific topics include:
- We will explain the court dimensions and define the "kitchen" or no-volley zone. Practice hitting and returning various shots, time spent on short game as well as deeper shots.

"An Abiding Sense of Tragedy": Irish Literary Tradition, the Ould Tales to the New

In this course, we will examine the important role that storytelling has played in the history of Ireland, from bronze age mythology to the cultivation and actualization of a national state identity. Genres such as the ballad, plays, and essays will be examined as a means of understanding the transition from an explanation of natural phenomena to a vehicle for social change.
Folk Art Fun at the Shelburne Museum - an Intergenerational Experience

Under Our Lake: The Fascinating Archaeological History of Lake Champlain

This course will introduce students to the history and archaeology of Lake Champlain. Through shared readings, lively discussion, and multimedia presentations, we will explore some of the area's most famous shipwrecks and learn about the critical role of the Lake during the Revolutionary War and War of 1812. In addition, we will study the basics of underwater archaeology and view some artifacts from the Lake in person during a field trip to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum (a special discounted museum and tour fee of $5 per person will be collected at the museum door). Transportation to the museum is on your own.
