The University of Vermont’s year-round course provides students with the skills they need to succeed in working with English Language Learners at home or abroad. The course is offered in Summer, Fall, and Spring terms and meets the English Language Development Standards set forth by WIDA (World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment).
The course is delivered in a hybrid online and on-campus format. The curriculum focuses on working with children, adults, and professionals. Students focus on a variety of methodologies, classroom disciplinary methods, and choosing which methods work best in a particular classroom. The course is in alignment with Learning English as a Second Language (ESL) standards.
The innovative practicum portion of the course provides students with experience in working with non-native English speakers. The practicum typically takes place on Saturdays with participants from local schools who are English language learners. (Schedules may vary per semester.)
A non-credit bearing certificate of completion is awarded to those who successfully complete the entire course and practicum.
