Section Description
Ancient Greek medicine was humorous, as in the 4 bodily humors (blood, phlegm, and biles): it is also scary, because they 'knew' very little of what we consider medical 'knowledge' today. This course looks primarily at the somewhat legendary figure of Hippocrates, his legacy and his works. As much philosophy as proto-natural science as sheer 'armchair' speculation, ancient medicine offers a fascinating way to learn about medicine, ethics, logic, history, and humanity.
Section Expectation
No prior knowledge of the topic area is required.
Readings: translations of ancient Greek texts, modern textbook chapters, and articles.
Evaluation
There will be factual tests, presentations of material, and at least one writing project.
