Section Description
The course's overall aim is to begin to queer how we construct and study art history and study queer figures and queer practices in art history. The course will cover major historical events and developments relating to queer identity, emphasizing visual representations and the role of art, including changing terms and civil rights struggles and achievements. Artists of note who we will study in this course include but are not limited to Travis Alabanza, Claude Cahun, micha cárdenas, Ren Hang, Frida Kahlo, Kalup Linzy, Catherine Opie, L.J. Roberts, Jacolby Satterwhite, and Andy Warhol. Queerness as a method of reworking art history and rethinking the study of art history necessarily proposes alternative methods of producing knowledge and necessitates the recognition and deconstruction of racism and classism. This course will work to decolonize thinking around art history, identity, and knowledge production. Through lectures, class discussions, texts, guest artists, and student lead research projects, we will investigate artwork, methods, and shifts in practices and theories throughout queer art history. This course will also support developing students' abilities to conduct art historical and visual studies research and relate queer history to contemporary art and your creative and/or research practice.
Section Expectation
Students will be expected to critically and creatively engage with assigned course materials, conduct independent research, and engage in class discussions. This course combines lecture and discussion formats. Students should expect to spend 6-8 hours per week on coursework outside of class, with additional time for larger research projects. Assigned course readings, videos, podcasts, etc., will be distributed via the course platform. Additional research may be done outside of these materials as determined by student interest.
Evaluation
Grades will be based on attendance and participation, short writing assignments, research and possibly quizzes.
