About ARTH 2885 A
Study of selected aspects of gender, race, or ethnicity in art, and/or of the contributions of women or ethnically diverse people to the visual arts. Material and emphasis vary with instructor. Representative topic: Women in Art. May be repeated for credit with different content. Topics vary by offering; periodic offering at intervals that may exceed four years. Prerequisite: Three hours in Art History.

Section Description
This course addresses the distinctive paths taken by artists of African descent in the Americas. A consideration of the arts developing out of cultures represented by Afro-descendants and works of art that directly draw on African influences. The course will focus on an overview of Black American artists who have worked within the mainstream styles and methods of practices, but disrupting these traditions to reflect concerns of the Black community and its history. Intertwined in our discussions will be the recognition of how African traditions are a vital part to African American art.
Section Expectation
This class is organized chronologically starting with the history of the slave trade and focuses on key moments, artists, movements that reflect and encompass the African American experience. Students are expected to participate in discussions, be open to new ideas, and the critical reframing of art history.
Evaluation
Students will engage in a variety of acuities both in and out of the classroom that include lecture, discussion, research, and/or weekly writing exercises.
