Section Description

DNCE 1200 Movement and Improvisation
This class is open to anyone interested in movement and improvisation as pathways to artistic expression and creative exploration. It functions as a laboratory for experimentation, performance, and inquiry, emphasizing both practical and expanded approaches to the body that unlock new possibilities for embodiment. Through a focus on physical practice, students will cultivate strength, courage, adaptability, fluidity, and awareness. The course supports the development of strategies for engaging space, time, composition, and performance, guiding students from individual improvisation toward collaborative work in solo, duo, trio, and group forms. Students will be encouraged to broaden their understanding of improvisation and its potential applications. The class prioritizes awareness not only as an artistic tool but as a transferable life skill, alongside fostering clarity in physical communication and cohesion within group collaboration. In addition, we will explore improvisation across varied contexts, including site-responsive and environmental work, as well as intersections with sound, language, and music.

Section Expectation

Students must be fundamentally interested in wider concepts of movement improvisation, performance, and collaboration and remain active in their inquiry throughout the semester. Classes will be studio-based while also expanding out to different locations (campus, nature, Fleming Museum, etc.) as well. Students should expect to spend 1-3 hours a week on coursework outside of class, with additional time for the presentations.
