About BHSC 1340 A02

Lecture and laboratory experiences about molecular and cellular structure, function and physiology using human cells as the model.

Notes

Must register for lecture; Open to Degree and PACE students.

Section Description

This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to molecular and cellular relationships to cell physiology, using human blood cells as a model system. The goals of the lecture component of this course are that students learn the fundamental concepts of basic cell biology while gaining an understanding of the specific functions of the various blood cells and other cell types within the body. Students will acquire knowledge of the physiological processes that regulate human cells and the mechanisms that lead to cellular dysfunction during disease states. The laboratory experiences are designed to enhance student knowledge of basic cell biology and to introduce students to the techniques of cell analysis used in clinical and research laboratories.

Section Expectation

This course includes lecture and laboratory portions (lab section will contain a separate syllabus and schedule, depending on the instructor). The final course grade will consist of 75% lecture activities (exams, quizzes, assignments, and attendance) and 25% lab activities (from the weekly lab section).

Required materials for the lecture portion of the course:
1) Textbook: Interactive Cell Biology with Achieve by Macmillan Learning; ISBN is coming from the publisher. It may be cheaper to buy the bundle directly from them and I will post the ISBN once I have it.

2). Students will need to have an electronic device to utilize iClicker for class and a laptop that can run the Respondus Lockdown Browser to take in-class exams.

3) Students will need to purchase a lab manual (about 30 dollars) from the bookstore that contains the lab activities and worksheets needed for the lab section. This should be brought to every lab section; labs begin the first week of class.

Evaluation

Final Grades for the course will be based on the following distribution:

4 Lecture Exams - 50% (12.5% each)
Assignments -12.5%
Lecture Quizzes - 7.5%
Lecture Attendance and Participation Activities - 5%
Pre-laboratory Quizzes - 5%
Post-laboratory Worksheets - 7.5%
Lab Report - 5%
Final Lab Report - 7.5%
