About SOC 1370 OL1

Section Description
You’ve probably learned about the Underground Railroad — but what about the reverse Underground Railroad? Segregation beyond the South? Human “zoos”? States that explicitly banned Black people? These are just some of the stories most textbooks skip—and most Americans never learn.
This online course examines the history of race in the United States through a sociological lens, exploring how race is socially constructed and how power and privilege shape U.S. society. We also explore how past and present-day discrimination influence housing, criminal justice, immigration, media, and more. By the end of the course, students will better understand how race lies at the center of our nation’s story.
This course fulfills the D1 and social science requirements. No prerequisites needed.
