Section Description

PH 6103 is designed for public health students, public health professionals, healthcare professionals, and graduate students who want to learn how to conduct clinical and translational research. Offered in an asynchronous online format, the course actively engages the student in the conduct of clinical and translational research by working through data scenarios, preparing an Institutional Review Board (IRB) application, and participating in peer review. Each student selects a research topic over the course of the term and prepares an Institutional Review Board (IRB) application. Key objectives include understanding human subjects protections and mastering good clinical practices relevant to clinical and translational research. By the end of the course, students will be able to integrate ethical, legal, and equity considerations into research design and implementation, and apply practical skills aligned with established good clinical practices.

Section Expectation

This asynchronous online graduate-level course guides students through the development of an Institutional Review Board (IRB) application using a combination of lectures, readings, interactive case discussions, and structured writing assignments. Students engage approximately nine hours per week through online lectures, the YellowDig discussion platform, and progressive application development. Major graded components include participation in clinical and translational research discussions, weekly assignments, a peer-review exercise, and a final project in the form of a completed IRB application. Throughout the course, students build advanced research skills while participating in a peer-review process modeled after an IRB. This experience strengthens their ability to critically evaluate research and address key issues in translational science— skills essential for both conducting and reviewing health research.

Evaluation

Grades will be based on discussions, weekly assignments, peer review, and a final project.
