Intermediate-level creative writing course. Representative topics: Literary Journalism, Travel Writing; Art of Adaptation. May repeat for credit with different content. Topics vary by offering; periodic offering at intervals may exceed four years. Prerequisites: ENGL 1700, ENGL 1702, ENGL 1705, ENGL 1730, or ENGL 1740; minimum Sophomore standing.

Section Description
Literary Journalism is a writing workshop for students interested in trying their hands at longform magazine essays. We will study classic and contemporary examples of immersion reportage, interview-based and historical profiles, and reported arts and culture reviews and essay-reviews. Each student will produce a couple of short first-person immersion/participant-observer pieces and one extended literary journalism project.
Section Expectation
Weekly readings of classic and contemporary literary journalism examples; writing prompts and exercises; peer critique for workshops of original student work; extensive revision of both short (800-1000 words) and long (2500-5000 words) writing projects.
Evaluation
Grade is based on participation and a final portfolio of revised writing.
