Overview

Why life transitions need better support

Life transitions, such as grief, illness, career changes, divorce, and parenthood, often arrive without a shared way to understand what’s happening or how to move through it.

When major life events are treated as something to “get through” rather than a process to move within, it disrupts routines, relationships, and a person’s sense of self, leading to increased stress, uncertainty, and emotional strain.

Research shows that when transitions are given structure, language, and space for reflection, people experience greater resilience and psychological well-being.

From disruption to transformation

This life transitions certificate explores a clear transitions framework that brings order and meaning to uncertainty. It’s designed to help professionals, such as counselors and wellness practitioners, better support their clients and can benefit anyone facing unexpected life events.

It blends modern psychology with mindfulness, coping frameworks, and wisdom traditions. You’ll learn to reframe transitions like grief, career shifts, illness, parenthood, and aging not as unmooring, but as meaningful opportunities for growth and renewal.

What You’ll Learn

Life transitions force us to stretch our limits and boundaries, revise our senses of identity, and become different versions of ourselves. Without an understanding of the flow of life transitions, and with decreasing community recognition and support of the accompanying identity shifts, the entire transitions process can feel unsettling.

We try to cling to certainty and predict what will happen or micromanage aspects of our lives simply to regain a sense of control. This can cause patterns of negative thinking and fear.

By the end of this transitions training, you’ll be able to:

  • Identify common emotional, cognitive, and identity-related responses to major events
  • Apply evidence-based adaptation skills to support coping with change, reduce stress, and help clients to become more resilient in the future
  • Use a structured transitions framework to guide clients (or yourself) through periods of uncertainty
  • Strengthen the ability to move through transitions with exercises that encourage reflection, meaning-making, and mindful awareness, which can also help clients increase long-term resilience
  • Develop a personalized transitions “map” that supports healthier adjustment and growth

What Sets UVM Apart

Most courses on embracing transitions focus on one type of change, like at work or personal events like grief. Even well-known and accepted frameworks for life span development—such as Eric Erikson’s models and Gail Sheehy’s groundbreaking work Passages, focus on life change that occurs at set points during one’s lifetime. UVM’s transition training takes a broader view.

We blend modern psychology with historical and Indigenous wisdom to offer a stage-based approach to life transitions. That way, you can apply what you learn universally to any experience.
