Do I need any prior knowledge of cheesemaking or are there any prerequisites for the Certificate?

Yes, students need a fundamental knowledge of cheesemaking prior to the course.

I am a hobbyist cheesemaker. Is this course a good fit for me?

Cheesemaking hobbyists and enthusiasts are encouraged to take the course, but note that the final learning objectives are geared towards production larger than what can be produced at home.

Are there any required materials for this course?

Yes, students will need to purchase American Farmstead Cheese: The Complete Guide to Making and Selling Artisan Cheeses by Paul S. Kindstedt. All other materials will be available via Blackboard.

What is the weekly time commitment for the course?

Most students spend about 5-7 hours per week on the coursework.

I am a busy professional. What are the requirements for the online course?

We understand how busy you are and also how hectic life can be. Our professional certificate program and individual modules are 100% online. Modules are released every Wednesday, and you’ll have flexibility in your access to course material at any time or day.

Can the course be taken from anywhere, including outside the US?

Yes! We love it when we have students from other countries enrolling in our courses. Our Art and Science of Small-Batch Cheesemaking Professional Certificate is 100% online.

Is there an internship or hands-on-experience that comes with this program?

No, but students are welcome to use the career centers that include internships and jobs in American Cheese Societyand the Vermont Cheese Council career centers.

What is the payment policy for this program?

All payments must be paid in full two weeks prior to the start of this offering. An attendee will not be allowed to attend this offering if a balance is due. You have the option of paying in full by credit card, or by making an initial payment at registration, however, ensuring the balance due is paid two weeks before the course begins. You will receive email reminders if you have a balance due.

What is the refund policy for this program?

If you need to cancel your attendance from this offering, you must notify us via email at cdecs@uvm.edu at least 3 days prior to the start date of this offering to receive a full refund, less a $25 cancellation fee. If a medical condition necessitates cancellation/withdrawal (documentation provided), this will be reviewed by our Studies Committee for any type of refund.

Are payment plans available?

Payment plans are not currently available for this program. Tuition must be paid in full two weeks prior to beginning the program.
