In the Land of Shadow and Light: A Total Solar Eclipse

March 14

Mark Breen – Senior Meteorologist and Planetarium Director, Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium

This April 8th, at 3:28 in the afternoon, a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience awaits – a total eclipse of the Sun. Of all the astronomical events that we can witness, none compares with the uniqueness, and the rarity of a total solar eclipse. For a brief moment in time, the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, turning the day into a deep twilight, allowing stars and planets to appear, prompting birds to roost, and leaving people to wonder at what has happened. In ancient times, before science had made sense of an eclipse, people were understandably fearful, watching the source of life-giving warmth and light extinguished in the middle of the sky, in the middle of the day. Through the centuries, humans worked tirelessly at unraveling the mysteries of the heavens, and eventually came to understand the role of the Moon, orbiting the Earth, yet only very rarely passing so precisely between the Sun and Earth as to create an eclipse. In more recent times, scientists have used eclipses to gain valuable insight into the nature of the Sun, and even to prove some of the profound theories of the great Albert Einstein. Mark Breen, the planetarium director at the Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium, will bring light to the shadowy nature of eclipses, from their history, to the reasons they are so rare, to the science and the wonder that draws people from the corners of the globe to experience those brief moments of totality.
