Section Description

This course provides students with foundational skills in finding, interpreting, and communicating data. It is a practical introduction to working with data: where it comes from, how to use it responsibly, and how to avoid common pitfalls in its interpretation.

In an increasingly data-driven world, the ability to understand and clearly communicate quantitative information is a valuable skill in virtually any career. This course emphasizes that dimension, challenging students to present and analyze data in ways that are accurate, accessible, and meaningful. To that end, it integrates basic numerical reasoning, graphical analysis, written communication, and oral presentation.

By the end of the course, students will be equipped to locate and evaluate data sources and communicate data-driven insights with clarity and confidence.

Section Expectation

This course assumes a basic working knowledge of Excel, Word, and standard web navigation. There will be no introductory tutorials on these tools. Students are expected to arrive with foundational skills and a willingness to build on them independently.

In Excel, students should already know how to perform basic mathematical operations, sort data, cut, copy, and paste, create and edit basic charts and graphs, and adjust formatting in spreadsheets and graphs. In Word, students should be able to create and format a document and insert and format tables and graphs within it.

Evaluation

Final grades will be based on weekly exercises, two mini projects, and a final project.
