About ECON 1200 A
Representative topics: policy issues and debates such as social welfare programs, health policy, energy and climate policy, minimum wage, housing and zoning laws, education policy, poverty alleviation and discrimination, and regulations and institutions more broadly. Examines the role of government interventions and how incentives shape individual consumer and firm behavior under different market structures. For students from any discipline. Topics vary by offering; periodic offering at intervals that may exceed four years.

Section Description
This course applies core economic principles to the business and structure of professional and amateur athletics. Students will discover how concepts like supply and demand, incentives, competition, and market power play out in the sports industry. Topics may include player salaries and labor negotiations, team profitability and ownership, the economics of college athletics, stadium deals and public subsidies, and the rise of sports gambling and media rights.
Section Expectation
Students are expected to attend class regularly, complete assigned readings before each class, and come prepared to participate in discussion. No prior background in economics is required, but students should be curious, open to new ways of thinking, and willing to engage with real-world data and current events in the sports world.
Evaluation
Final grades will be based on problem sets, written reflections, two midterms and a final exam.
