Section Description

This course introduces students to a toolbox of research methods that researchers use to make sense of the world around them. Students will learn about a method by practicing it in “the field,” conducting their own analyses of results, and presenting findings in a variety of creative ways. We will consider the advantages and disadvantages of specific qualitative methods, as well as ways that researchers use multiple methods to achieve greater understanding of their topic. The course is designed to prompt students to think critically about larger issues of the production of knowledge, epistemologies (how we know what we know), and socially constructed “truths.” We will critically evaluate the role of the researcher, power and positionality in the research process.
Students will practice research methods and different ways to share or visualize findings with diverse audiences. Students will exit the course with an introduction to several qualitative research methods, IRB Human Subjects Research certification, and hands-on research experience.

Section Expectation

Students will attend all class meetings, conduct homework and critical reflections, do practice sessions in the field, and assist with a research project. The assigned text is: Qualitative Research Methods in Human Geography, 5th edition, Hay and Cope, editors, Oxford University Press. We will have texts for you to use for the semester, but you are welcome to purchase your own copy independently. Each student must have a dedicated notebook for field notes.

Evaluation

Homework and field work, critical reflections, research contribution, reading quizzes, in-class final exam.
