Section Description
Sound Art - What is it? How is it different from music? Let's learn about feedback, loops, glitch, sampling, field recording, contact microphones and other fun stuff! We'll develop acoustic awareness, and cultivate the practice of DEEP LISTENING. Come get weird!
In Sound Art, the auditory experience is the primary medium, creating immersive and interdisciplinary sonic experiences that explore spatial relationships, acoustics, performance, and the physicality of sound. We'll study artists like Pauline Oliveros, Florian Hecker, Susan Philipz, Tarek Atoui, Janet Cardiff, Lawrence Abu Hamdan, and many others. This course demands dedication to attention. This means actively resisting how our attention economy is inherently structured. It may be challenging to listen to atonal sound work for extended lengths of time, but that is the challenge sound art provides!
Section Expectation
Over the course of the semester you will make five different audio projects. We will use the Digital Audio Workstations (DAW) of Audacity to start with and work our way up to exploring Ableton Live and MAX. You will also complete one group research presentation and one-two reflection papers. Sound art is a porous, multifaceted terrain, and students will be encouraged to mine whatever skills they bring to the table as they pursue class projects. Are you a coder? A sculptor? A zoologist? A poet? An activist? An architect? All of these skills and subjectivities can productively contribute to the sound art projects you produce in this class. No prior training in music is required.
