Section Description

This course covers the current state-of-the-art in wearable sensors for human health, and the biomechanical and physiological phenomena they are being used to measure. The course emphasizes applications related to monitoring and assessing human gait and balance. This course will cover data collection, signal processing, data analysis, regulatory and ethical considerations, human factors, and emerging trends for multiple wearable sensing technologies. The course objectives include: (1) Describing applications of wearable devices for monitoring health metrics, (2) Applying basic signal processing to analyze data from wearable sensors; (3) Analyzing wearable sensor data to test hypotheses related to human biomechanics and physiology. (4) Design an experiment to address hypotheses related to human biomechanics and physiology using wearable sensors. (5) Draft a scientific research article answering a question about wearable sensors.

Section Expectation

The course will consist of in-person lectures with guided group work. Active participation is expected throughout the lectures. During guided work, students will work in small teams to collect, process, and/or analyze data, or do independent project work. Students are expected to bring a laptop to class in order to actively participate in guided work. Students should expect to spend 5-8 hours per week on coursework outside of class, with additional time required for the final project. The primary required readings will be scientific journal articles; students will be responsible for the content of these articles.

Evaluation

Grades will be based on in-class attendance and participation, homework assignments, in-class quizzes, a midterm report, and a final paper and presentation.
