Section Description
Activist journalism is about changing the world, not just reporting on it. In this hands-on class, you will learn to use multimedia tools to produce journalism that advances a social justice cause, covers a protest movement, and amplifies marginalized voices and views. As activist journalists, you will follow stories and issues you are passionate about and promote causes you believe in. This applied learning class is a combination of workshops on media skills, guest lectures from international journalists, and self-directed research and reporting in the field. You will learn how to develop your own multimedia stories, producing written, audio, photo, and video content from start to finish. You will master the art of finding a good story idea, learn how to prepare for and conduct great interviews, and write and produce engaging multimedia news stories for social change. In this class, you will learn by doing, crafting and publishing stories on your own website, strategically using social media to distribute your material, and publishing your work in local and global media outlets.
Section Expectation
The class involves a series of student-produced projects on topics and areas of their choice, reading assignments, analysis of contemporary news, lectures, discussions, workshops, guest speakers, and group activities in class.
Evaluation
