Section Description

PH 6102 is designed for public health and healthcare professionals, graduate students, and others interested in learning how to design and critically evaluate clinical and translational research. Offered in an asynchronous online format, the course engages students in research design scenarios, protocol development, and peer review. Each student selects a research topic and prepares a protocol consistent with the research strategy section of a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Small Research Grant (R03), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) grant, or equivalent format. Course objectives include learning to discuss, review, and design research. By the end of the course, students will be able to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of common clinical and translational research designs, craft a compelling research question, select an appropriate design, plan data collection and analysis, estimate sample size, and outline a project timeline.

Section Expectation

This asynchronous online graduate-level course guides students through the design and critique of original research protocols using lectures, weekly readings, interactive case discussions, and structured writing assignments. Students engage approximately nine hours per week through online lectures, the YellowDig discussion platform, and progressive protocol development. Major graded components include participation in research design scenarios and discussions, reflective writing and annotated bibliographies, a midterm draft submission, and a final project formatted as a grant protocol. Throughout the course, students gain advanced research design skills while engaging in a peer-review process modeled after NIH study sections, strengthening their ability to think critically about design quality, build a rigorous literature review, and communicate research ideas clearly and persuasively—skills essential for anyone pursuing or reviewing health research.

Evaluation

Grades will be based on participation, weekly assignments, midterm, and a final research protocol.
