Section Description

This course introduces students to the theory and practice of small group communication in academic, professional, and community contexts, with particular attention to collaboration across difference. Students will examine how communication shapes group formation, development, decision-making, leadership, conflict, and outcomes, while also exploring the challenges and opportunities that arise in group settings. Working as part of a small group or team is integral in almost any profession and effective collaboration is essential to addressing the challenges of our time. Learning outcomes include: 1) Develop understanding of small group communication theories and processes 2) Build practical communication skills for effective and inclusive collaboration 3) Critically reflect on personal communication practices in groups 4) Participate thoughtfully in diverse academic, professional, and community teams.

Section Expectation

This course combines interactive lectures, structured discussions, and experiential activities. Students should expect an engaged, discussion-based classroom environment that emphasizes respectful dialogue, collaboration, and reflection. Active participation in both whole-class and small group activities is essential to the learning experience. Required materials will primarily consist of scholarly and applied readings made available through the course learning platform, along with a small group communication textbook or equivalent resource.

Evaluation

Grades are based on attendance and participation, weekly assignments, quizzes, reflection and group activities.
