Section Description
Contemporary artists create work across various approaches, materials, and media, often tackling complex, nuanced, and sometimes provocative topics via diverse creative, aesthetic, and gestural processes. This course surveys a range of artists, practices, and issues prevalent in art today as a means of deepening student understanding of the art world, its debates, and how to situate oneself as an artist. This is a hybrid class in which you will make work, and learn about contemporary artists, engage in discussions, critiques, and research all in order to develop your skills as a contemporary artist. There will also be field trips, visiting artist presentations, readings, and workshops.
Section Expectation
Through studio practices, critique, and seminar this course investigates considerations of concept, content, context, form, and technique; introduces vocabulary, skill sets, formats, and models of making; utilizes a variety of media that may include drawing, painting, color, photography, video, three-dimensional construction, digital imaging, sound, video, and performance. This course will promote the development of each student’s individual sensibilities; demonstrate how reading, writing, talking, and looking are integral to making; and introduce students to artists, culture producers, various artistic methods and cultural opportunities in contemporary art today.
Evaluation
The majority of evaluation will be based on student artworks. However, success overall will be demonstrated by a commitment to the class, and artistic and scholarly growth will also impact how students are evaluated.
