Section Description
“Everyone is an artist” said Joseph Beuys. Is everyone an artist? Is your mother an artist? Are the farmers herding their sheep artists? What about the hand painted bodega sign, is that art? Art and being an artist has been watered down by our society, devaluing it and mislabeling it to further society’s capitalist goals. How can we take back the power of the artist and return art to its feral, wild self? This class will do that by exploring what it means to create without inhibitions, to embrace failure, and to help students realize where their art fits into the local and global context of contemporary art. We will work on a variety of projects ranging from paintings, printmaking, digital literacy and social sculpture.
Section Expectation
Students will be expected to demonstrate fundamental skills in a variety of art mediums (such as drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, and digital media). Apply strategies of experimentation, iteration, and risk-taking to generate innovative visual solutions. Students will be expected to translate ideas and concepts into visual form using different media. All while developing the time management, craftsmanship, and studio habits necessary for successful art-making.
