Section Description

Dance Repertory led by faculty and dance artist Lynn Ellen Schimoler, is a studio course in which students are collaborators in the composition and development of dance work. All levels of dance and movement experience are welcome. Through phrase work and structured improvisation, dancers will deepen technical efficiency, musicality, and stylistic clarity while embodying shared movement ideas and artistic intent, with priority enrollment given to DNCE majors and minors. Course activities will center on identifying natural movement tendencies, the improvisational processes that inform dance composition, and introductory partnering technique. Class sessions will also include reflection on the historical, creative, and collaborative contexts of choreographer–dancer generated work. Coursework occurs in Fall 2026, with the finished piece to be performed in the UVM Dance Program’s annual concert, Dancing Uphill, in February 2027 at the Cohen Hall Performance Studio. Students are expected to commit to rehearsals and performance schedules. Interested students are encouraged to attend the UVM Dance Program Open House and Audition on March 30, 5:00–6:30 pm at Cohen Hall Performance Studio. If you are unable to attend, please contact the instructor with questions or interest.

Section Expectation

Students should bring a spirit of inquisitiveness and openness to the composition and rehearsal process. As classes will operate in a rehearsal format, students must maintain full attendance throughout the fall term and participate in all technical rehearsals and February 2027 performances.

Evaluation

Each component of the grading distribution is designed to support learning and contribute meaningfully to the final grade. Grading Distribution: Attendance/Participation 40%, Enhanced proficiency/Collaboration 40%, Final Performance 20%
