Section Description
This course is a survey of the history of theatre from its ancient origins through the Renaissance. The course covers key theatrical periods and styles including Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, as well as different early Asian theatre forms. It also covers a variety of medieval and Renaissance works by writers including Hrosvitha, Machiavelli, Christopher Marlowe, Shakespeare, Sor Juana, Molière, and Aphra Behn.
Section Expectation
The course is taught in lecture/discussion format, with occasional in-class readings from playscripts and works of theatre theory. Students acquire a working knowledge of the relevant eras, conventions, texts, events, and people that form a common vocabulary for present-day theatre practitioners.
Evaluation
The course includes three types of graded activities: textbook chapter study guides, a midterm and final exam, and a research based creative project.
