Section Description
Fundamental principles of electricity and magnetism; electrostatic fields, and magnetic fields of steady currents, Electric and magnetic properties of matter, electric and magnetic potentials and electromagnetic energy are introduced. The content is introduced under the following topics.
1. Electrostatics
2. Electric fields in matter
3. Magnetostatics
4. Magnetic fields in matter
5. Electromagnetic induction
6. Maxwell’s equations
During the lectures, I will be going over the important concepts and theories with the use of in class worksheets. Apart from that I will be doing several example problems. Students will gain experience in solving complex problems related to electrostatics and magnetostatics and proficiency in visualizing scalar and vector fields.
Section Expectation
To achieve the course learning outcomes, please refer to the following class expectations.
1. Attendance: Regular attendance is important in mastering the material.
2. Preparation: Students are required to read the assigned text in advance of class. Coming to class with questions stimulated by readings is expected. There will be conceptual quizzes given every week.
3. Homework and In class worksheets: Homework assignments will be posted to the course web site. Expected to write up complete and detailed solutions neatly and submit the solutions on or before the deadline to earn the full credit. In class worksheets will be provided during the class period.
4. Exams: Exams will be based on homework problems. Exams are closed-book. A single-page sheet with notes to use during the exam is allowed.
Evaluation
The students will be evaluated based on
homework and worksheets
quizzes
two mid exams
final exam.
