Section Description

The class is split into two parts, a lecture component and a lab component. The lecture section holds approximately 200 students and utilizes notability presentations, multimedia models and demonstrations for understanding of key conceptual and mathematical processes involving matter and its transformations. The lab sections hold approximately 22 students each, and allows the student to physically conduct experiments within the key topics presented in lecture. Small review sessions are also conducted during lab time to review important lecture concepts.

Section Expectation

Students will learn key topics in CHEM 1400 that include, but are not limited to Matter, Stoichiometry, Reactions, Gas Laws, Thermochemistry, Quantum Theory, Atomic and Molecular Structure, Electronic Configurations, Bonding and Intermolecular forces. Students will also encounter experiential learning of these topics in hands on laboratory sessions.

This section will have an optional textbook called Chemistry: Atoms First by Julia Burdge.

Evaluation

The lecture section of the course is evaluated with three mid-semester exams, twelve homework quizzes, and one final exam. The lecture component of the course counts for a total of 750 points. The lab section of the course is evaluated with weekly attendance, pre-lab report, pre-lab quiz, and full lab report for a total of 250 points. The grade in the class is the sum of both the lecture and lab points divided by 1000 points.
