Section Description
The goal of this course is to provide expertise in specific, student-selected GIS topics and software applications of value to the student’s educational and professional goals. This non-traditional course, part of the Geospatial Technologies Minor, is an opportunity to earn UVM credit for completing web courses through Esri Training. Students select online courses in intermediate/advanced GIS topics and specialized software suited to their educational goals and experience. Students can register for 1, 2, or 3 UVM credits, depending on their needs, and the overall workload (number of web courses) scales accordingly. Specific learning objectives vary as each student has a hand in designing their program of study. See the Esri Training Catalog for more information about the range of topics: http://www.esri.com/training (filter on “web courses” and “maintenance”).
Section Expectation
With the instructor’s guidance, students select Esri web courses and complete them independently to earn 1 UVM credit for each 15 hours of web course work. “Hours” in this case means the nominal amount of time required for selected web course as listed in the Esri Training catalog. (A student needing 3 credits, for example, would need to complete 45 hours of Esri web courses.) There are no in-person meetings. The course is generally self-paced with little in terms of a set schedule except that a proposal must be submitted and approved during the first two to three weeks of the semester, and one third of total web course hours must be completed during each month of the semester. (There are 2 intermediate deadlines roughly coinciding with the end of each month, culminating in the ultimate deadline for completing all course work, which is the last day of classes before final exams).
Evaluation
Grading is based on an approved proposal, average score on completed web courses, and successful, on-time completion (including intermediate deadlines) of each planned web course. Final grade will be influenced by late/incomplete course work or attempts to cram a lot of courses into a very short period prior to deadlines.
