Professor Wurthmann start the beginning of the semester with a loud “Welcome to Organic Chemistry. The best class at UVM”. For many students this class can generate a physical cringe. And yet, Professor Wurthmann thinks, organic chemistry can be an eye-opening experience that builds skills and understanding around some of the fundamental concepts of biochemistry, toxicology, pharmacology and environmental science.
Professor Wurthmann grew up in Scotland, UK and attended the University of Edinburgh. After graduating, he took a few gaps years working in medical research. These experiences reinvigorated his desire to explore organic chemistry and complete his PhD. Professor Wurthmann came to UVM and developed new methods for synthesizing novel amino acids (the building blocks of proteins). As he completed his PhD Professor Wurthmann was recruited to teach these organic chemistry classes. Professor Wurthmann thinks the students that come to learn organic chemistry are some of the best and brightest at UVM and he really enjoy working with them.
