Beliefs and value systems and their institutional arrangements, focusing on relationships between these systems and the larger social structure, in cross-cultural and historical perspective. Prerequisite: Three hours of Sociology.

Section Description
How have ideologies and religions shaped the course of history and present times? We will look at this question by exploring new religious movements, the link between religion and terrorism/other forms of violence, secularization, genocide, and religiously-based nationalism in the U.S. and abroad.
Section Expectation
Regular attendance and willingness to read books and articles.
Evaluation
Several objective exams as well as in-class assignments, and possibly a paper.
