Section Description

This course examines how urban environments shape population health, highlighting cities as both resources for well-being and contributors to health risks. Through perspectives from geography, public health, epidemiology, and urban planning, we explore how cities have developed in ways that impact health, touching on historical patterns like industrialization, segregation, and urban sprawl that create diverse and often unhealthy landscapes. Through the lens of the social determinants of health, students will investigate health disparities in cities and current urban health interventions, such as the role of green spaces, climate resilience, inclusive design, public transit, and food systems, assessing how policy and planning influence whether cities support health or pose risks.

Section Expectation

The format of this course will be seminar-based. Readings and course materials will be provided to the students. These will include academic journal articles and book chapters, and potentially, popular articles, films, and podcasts. Because this is a discussion-based course, students are expected not only to attend, but to participate actively and speak regularly in class. Participation is a graded component of the course and requires coming to class prepared, having completed the assigned materials in advance, and contributing thoughtfully to discussion.

Evaluation

Grades will be based on participation, assignments, group activities, and a final paper.
