Section Description
There are over 100 feature-length and short films and televised miniseries that have been made from the fiction of Stephen King. Not all of these cinematic adaptations have proven successful as works of art. This class, however, will consider several of the best Hollywood adaptations. These are titles immediately recognizable and core to any course seeking to explore the Hollywood career of Stephen King: CARRIE, THE SHINING, DR. SLEEP, THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, THE DEAD ZONE, STAND BY ME, APT PUPIL, DOLORES CLAIBORNE. These definite titles included in this course. Others will be added as I prepare the syllabus.
Section Expectation
Each week students will be responsible for watching one of the King adaptations in preparation for weekly in-class discussion. Each film will be available for free via a streaming service provided by the Media Center at UVM. Attendance at each class meeting where we will discuss these films is required. In addition, students will read a critical essay that sheds immediate insight on the film under discussion for each week. Many of these articles are included in the collection VIOLENCE IN THE FILMS OF STEPHEN KING (the course textbook). Other published critical essays will also be assigned and will be available online.
Evaluation
A cumulative take home final exam distributed on the last day of class. A midterm "scene analysis," where students will examine closely a 2 minute scene from one of the King films, due around midterms. This assignment is NOT a simple plot summary, but a close textual reading that challenges the writer to explore the meaning of the scene itself and its larger purpose and relationship to the film itsself.
