Section Description
This course was designed for learners of the Russian language and culture at the Intermediate to Advanced level and higher, based on the ACTFL proficiency level guidelines. The course invites you to explore and deepen your understanding of modern Russian culture and to improve your linguistic proficiency through contemporary cinema. Whether you're passionate about storytelling, interested in Soviet and post-Soviet lifestyles, want to learn about Soviet/Russian society and reflect on historical and social roots of current phenomena, or aim to sharpen your linguistic and intercultural skills, this course offers a dynamic and immersive experience for everyone.
Russian films will be used as a primary authentic material. We will interpret and discuss the cultural practices and values reflected in movies, their roots and perspectives, and compare them to those in our own culture. By examining both “high” and “popular” culture, you will also develop cross-cultural skills. Through contemporary Russian cinema, you will improve your language skills while also deepening your critical thinking, fostering creativity, and developing cross-cultural competence essential for today’s interconnected world.
Section Expectation
By the end of the course, your Russian language skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing will be stronger. You’ll expand your vocabulary by 1,300–1,400 words and expressions, including film-related terms, and gain confidence in discussing key historical, cultural, and social topics in both speech and writing.
Through the study and analysis of films, you’ll sharpen your ability to interpret and discuss complex ideas by examining narratives, structure, character development, and cultural themes. This process will also strengthen your critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
At the same time, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of modern post-Soviet Russian culture. By comparing cultural practices with your own, you’ll develop greater cultural awareness and intercultural competence, helping you connect more meaningfully across cultures.
