Section Description

This course is an interdisciplinary and critical discussion on artificial intelligence, focusing especially on three perspectives:

- Historical: We will examine how artificial intelligence developed from the enlightenment, through early computing history, to the present day
- Psychological/Philosophical: We will discuss the nature of intelligence, how it is defined, and how it is measured
- Economic: We will discuss the effects of artificial intelligence on the economy, comparing it with the past economic effects of automation and technological developments

Throughout the course, we will especially focus on the role of language in meaning and intelligence.

Section Expectation

By the end of this course, students should develop:

- An understanding of the history of artificial intelligence
- A familiarity with philosophical perspectives on the theory of mind and intelligence
- A familiarity with psychological definitions of intelligence
- A critical understanding of measurements of intelligence, such as IQ scores
- A familiarity with how skills are measured in machine learning systems
- A critical understanding of the effects of technological change on economic and social structurs

Evaluation

Discussions (30%) - students will read assigned papers, and discuss the readings with the class online and asynchronously. Discussions will also be continued during class time.
Presentations (30%) - students will make a presentation, elaborating on the current topic of the course. The number and length of the presentations will depend on the number of students in the class.
Final paper (40%) - Students will write a research paper completed throughout the semester on a topic of their choice related to the theme of the course.
