Conveys the molecular mechanisms by which drugs act in the body and the principles of drug design. Highlights the importance of medicinal chemistry as it overlaps with the disciplines of Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Cell Biology, and Pharmacology. Prerequisites: Organic Chemistry and Biology, Biochemistry, or Instructor permission.
Section Description
ONLINE VERSION: This 3-credit course conveys the molecular mechanisms by which drugs act in the body and the principles drug design. It highlights the importance of medicinal chemistry as it overlaps with the disciplines of chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, cell biology, and pharmacology. The course content is split into two parts. Part 1 loosely follows the flow of content in the textbook. For part 2 we will take a trip back in time and review examples of the “Most important drugs in history”. These are world changing, famous compounds that have had a significant impact on civilization.
Section Expectation
5000 level courses are open to Undergraduate and Graduate Students. This course can be used towards credit for the minor in Pharmacology. Undergraduates pursuing an AMP may be able to use this course toward both their undergraduate and graduate credits. Prerequisites: Organic Chemistry, Intro to Biology, or Permission. Lecture materials in Brightspace. Required Text: An Introduction to Medicinal Chemistry (7th Ed), Graham L. Patrick, Oxford Press, 2023, or 6th edition, 2017. We will use a discussion board.
