FTS 2060 Comedy
Section Description
Comedy is an art from. It describes how we deal with something that we don’t quite have the language to express, whether it is strange objects, or the troubles and predicaments that threaten to unravel the foundation of our everyday lives. Because of this capacity, comedy is in fact social practice that we engage in to deal with the strangeness and threats that we face as social subjects, and as a society. In this class, we will look at comedies from around the world. We will explore what is universal in transnational comedies, and what is particular to them when they come from different social contexts. We will make these discoveries with the help of theories of the human and the comedic form. In the end, it’s all about the power of the intellect and a love of life. And we will definitely unpack all those jokes that made you laugh, but you were afraid to tell.
