Section Description
The thriller is almost as old as cinema itself, but there have been few theoretical explorations of it despite its popularity. This course will probe the questions that this genre raises: What makes it effective? What does the thriller tell us about our desire? What does the thriller say about our relationship to the law? How does it articulate political positions? In addressing these questions, we will watch both classic and modern thrillers, including, for example, Silence of the Lambs, The Fugitive, and Get Out.
