Section Description

Critical analysis of theory and research related to justice, caring, and change in education and other social institutions. Focus: ideology, diversity, and management of knowledge. This course will also examine the ways in which issues of social class, immigrant status, race, gender, sexuality, (dis)ability status, and other salient social identities shape students’ experiences and outcomes within educational institutions along the P-20 continuum. In seeking to understand the lives of others, we are also asked to turn the mirror back on ourselves and examine the ways in which these same issues have and continue to shape our experiences as scholar-practitioners. Readings in this course will draw from a range of disciplines, theories, and perspectives. In completing this course, you will be able to: (1) Critically examine the larger social, economic, and political contexts in which schools, districts, colleges, and universities operate; (2) Examine how public policies (e.g., housing policy, transportation policy, and other government policies) have shaped regions, schools, districts, educational institutions, and the lives and opportunities of students and families; (3) Apply diverse philosophical and conceptual perspectives to the examination of power, privilege, knowledge, and inequity as it relates to educational and social systems; (4) Apply concepts derived from scholarly literature to critique and re-envision educational policies and practices; and (5) Explore our assumptions and beliefs regarding the purposes of educational and social policies and practices.
