About CEE 4450 A
Students will learn to use spatial analysis methods to support sustainable transportation and land use planning. Topics include spatial data types, mapping and data visualization, spatial operations and analysis, and network analysis. In-class examples and exercises will include applications related to transportation, land use, sustainability, planning, and equity. Credit not awarded for both CEE 4450 and CEE 5450. Prerequisite: CEE 3400 or CEE 3415 or Instructor permission.

Section Description
Students will learn to use spatial analysis methods to support sustainable transportation and land use planning. Topics will include spatial data types, mapping and data visualization, spatial operations and analysis, and network analysis. In-class examples and exercises will include applications related to transportation, land use, sustainability, planning, and equity. Additional topics and applications may be included depending on student interest.
All topics include both a lecture and an in-class workshop that allows you to apply and practice the concepts and techniques described in the lecture. These are supplemented with homework and project assignments that support deeper understanding and independent learning. Some of the class activities and assignments involve independent work while others incorporate paired or group work.
Section Expectation
After completing this course you will be able to:
• gather and evaluate transportation related spatial data sources;
• use Geographic Information Systems (GIS), including ESRI’s ArcGIS software and the R programming language to create maps and use spatial analysis techniques;
• independently and effectively design and conduct a spatial analysis project; and
• use spatial analysis to inform transportation system evaluation and design.
