Institutions, processes, and problems of American government. Credit not awarded for both POLS 1300 and POLS 1013.

Notes

Open to degree and PACE students

Section Description

This course has two main objectives. The first is to familiarize you with the historical and theoretical foundations and institutions of the United States government, as well as the relevance of political behavior and civil rights and liberties in the political system in the US. The second objective is to encourage students to analyze democracy as practiced in the United States in both class lectures and written assignments.

Section Expectation

Students are expected to attend all class periods and to be prepared for class by completing the course reading assignments. Students are required to treat the instructor and their fellow students with respect.

Keep in mind that while we will be discussing current events throughout the semester, the goal of this class is to analyze what is happening in the United States today in the context of the evolution of US government from its foundation until today. This is a place for us to analyze the workings of the US government (historically and today), not a place for anyone (instructor included) to attempt to further their personal political opinions.

Evaluation

Student evaluation will be based on performance on two or three longer exams (that will include a written component) and short quizzes scheduled throughout the semester.
