About CHEM 1500 B

An exploration of the basic principles of Organic Chemistry including structure, bonding, conformational analysis, stereochemistry and reactivity. Designed for Chemistry and Biochemistry majors who have a strong high school chemistry background.

Section Description

Chemistry 1500 is a the first semester of a two semester sequence. In this course, we will build on the principles of bonding, hybridization, 3-dimensional structure, charge, acid base chemistry, stereochemistry and conformational analysis to understand and make reactivity predictions of organic molecules. An emphasis is placed on understanding reactions at a mechanistic level, rather than rote memorization. Students will use the reactivity we learn to predict the outcome of reactions. An accompanying laboratory will emphasize the reactivity discussed in lecture, and will provide students with practical hands on laboratory skills.

Section Expectation

The course grade is based on on-line homework assignments, quizzes, three examinations, a cumulative final examination, and a laboratory grade. (Note: You must earn a passing grade in the laboratory to receive a passing grade for the course. More than two laboratories missed for any reason will result in a failing grade for the course unless you are granted an incomplete by your Dean). Students should expect 5-6 hours per week in consistent studying and problem solving.

Evaluation

The following are representative percentages applied to each category. These may be changed slightly prior to the start of the semester:
Lab 20%
Quizzes 15%
Online Homework 5%
3 Midterm Exams 40%
Cumulative Final 20%
