About HSCI 1980 A

Introduces the principles and practices of analytical writing as applied to Health issues facing populations. Using literature and current events as a foundation, students learn different approaches to writing about issues relevant to the field of public health, including systemic racism and health equity.

Prereq enforced by the system: ENGL 1001 or equivalent. PACE students by permission and override.

Section Description

This course introduces students to analytical and argumentative writing in the context of public health and health equity. Drawing on literature and current events, students examine issues such as systemic racism and disparities in health outcomes (population health). The course covers multiple modes of discourse (e.g., analysis, argumentation, persuasion, cause-and-effect) and how these approaches are adapted for different audiences and purposes. Writing assignments are scaffolded to support writing as a process, guiding students through drafting, revision, and the integration of written and oral feedback from the instructor. The course culminates in a portfolio that demonstrates growth and prepares students for the writing demands of future coursework.
