About ALE 2120 A

Notes

Prereqs enforced by the system: ALE/PSS 1100 or 1210 or PBIO 1040 Open to Degree and PACE students.

Section Description

This course will be split into two components: virtual asynchronous lectures and field labs. Lectures will be available as audiovisual recordings through Brightspace. Students will be responsible for watching lectures on their own time, preferably before the lab period as these concepts will build upon each other and be applied in lab. Field labs occur on-campus, at the Horticultural Research and Education Center (HREC) and on farms and forests in Chittenden and Addison counties. Students are encouraged to use the PSS vans for carpooling to and from field sites to minimize air pollution and to eliminate confusion of people arriving from multiple locations and finding parking for more vehicles than necessary.

Section Expectation

1) Articulate the basics of weed anatomy, phenology and life history characteristics
2) Collect, identify, and preserve a diverse array of agriculturally relevant weed species
3) Understand and apply knowledge of weed ecology for the development of effective weed management programs
4) Compare and contrast different weed management strategies and determine which ones are appropriate in particular situations

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated through:
Weed ID Test
Lab and Lecture Reflections
Weed Collection Project
Final project and presentation
