About ENGL 1740 A

In this intermediate writing course, students explore and practice variations in the genre known as the nonfiction essay, attending to audience, purpose, context, style, and medium.

Section Description

This course explores creative forms of the essay as a site of invention, experimentation, and discovery. We will consider the essay’s evolution—from its origins as an open-ended inquiry into ideas of self and society to its contemporary forms that test boundaries of structure, voice, and genre. Through readings that span topics such as identity, culture, art, gender, race, ancestry, home, and environment, we will examine how writers use the essay to think on the page and to reimagine experience.

Students will craft essays that investigate their own histories and curiosities, drawing inspiration from the diverse forms we study. Developing a writing practice will be a central focus: How do you create a writing process that sustains you? What compels you to write? What is the goal of revision? What story can only you tell and how do you develop the tools to do so?

Section Expectation

Students are expected to attend every class ready to participate in conversation about literature and writing; engage in free writes during class; develop their own essays that will be workshopped and revised; and develop their writing practice through journaling, drafting, revision, and consideration of their own unique needs as writers.

Evaluation

Assignments include three essays and two significant revisions of these essays, writing workshops, final portfolio of revised work, letters on your writing process, and journal entries.

Class Participation 25%; Essays, revisions, and homework 50%; final portfolio 25%.
