About STAT 1050 A

Explores how data shape public understanding of social issues while building statistical literacy. Students will learn to identify bias, consider ethical and structural influences, and apply descriptive and inferential statistics to interpret, visualize, and evaluate data across varied communities and perspectives. Credit not awarded after STAT 2000 or greater. Prerequisites: Two years High School algebra; no credit for Sophomores, Juniors, or Seniors in the mathematical and engineering sciences; credit for only one of STAT 051 and STAT 1050.

Section Description

An introductory course that assumes no knowledge of statistics.

Cannot be taken for credit after taking STAT 051 or STAT 052.

Focuses on statistical reasoning and literacy including applications to current social issues.

Section Expectation

Students are expected to:

Attend all class meetings.
Engage with the material and your classmates.
Treat all members of the learning community with kindness and respect.
Seek help as needed.
Complete weekly online homework assignments.
Complete approximately five short, written assignments focusing on a social justice topic of your choice.
Take six quizzes (approximately every two weeks).
Complete a final project.

Evaluation

Attendance & Participation in class are required and worth 5% of your grade.
Other grading criteria are: Homework 15%, Written Assignments 15% Quizzes 50%, and Project 15%.
