Pharmacology: Applied Systems Pharmacology (OL1)
3 credit hours
About PHRM 6010 OL1
A systems approach to basic and applied pharmacology, including pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles, drug receptors and mechanisms, and clinically relevant adverse effects. Develops skills in diagnostic reasoning and evidence-based medicine. Prerequisite: Graduate student or Instructor permission.
Notes
This is a self-paced lecture series with some Synchronous Case Based Sessions via zoom PACE students by permission and override.
Section Description
This course uses a systems approach to basic and applied pharmacology, including pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles, drug receptors and mechanisms, and clinically relevant adverse effects. The course applications will develop skills in diagnostic reasoning and evidence-based medicine. The course is appropriate for graduate students who have a strong background in biology and chemistry and seek to understand the mechanisms behind current pharmaceuticals. Topics covered include pathologies that require treatment, drug mechanisms and side effects, and drug metabolism by the body. Several Pharmacology faculty teach sessions in their area of expertise. Students with an interest in pursuing health-related fields are particularly encouraged to take the course. This course fulfills requirements for students pursuing the online programs: Master of Science in Pharmacology, Master of Science in Medical Sciences, and Master of Science in Dietetics.
Section Expectation
Understand the general pharmacodynamic principles that relate to receptor activity and the effects of binding agonists and antagonists. Define the different modes of drug delivery and recognize the importance of drug metabolism as a clearance mechanism. Understand the specific uses of drugs to correct pathophysiologic states. Compare and contrast the drug mechanisms within the major classes of drugs. Recognize the important side effects associated with the major classes of drugs. Apply specific case-based analysis to make a general diagnosis and specific treatment choices. Demonstrate communication skills and knowledge application through small group discussions and written assignments.
Evaluation
3 multiple choice exams (55%), 6 case study assignments (20%), 6 readiness quizzes (10%), 6 active learning attendance (7%), Term paper (8%)
