About MATH 2544 A
Vector spaces, linear independence, bases, linear transformations, matrices, determinants, change of basis characteristic equations, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, with applications. Emphasis on understanding and gaining facility with these concepts including proofs. Credit not given for both MATH 2522 and MATH 2544. Prerequisite: MATH 1248 or MATH 1242. Co-requisite: MATH 2248 or MATH 2055.
Notes
Prereqs enforced by the system: MATH 1248 or MATH 1242; Open to Degree and PACE students
Section Description
This is an introduction to abstract algebra in which we will study vector spaces and the properties of linear maps between them. We will spend some time on the problem of solving the general linear system of equation Ax = b, but our emphasis will be on the theory of linear spaces and maps. To emphasize: though this course cannot be taken for credit if you take Math 2522, and one can substitute for the other, this course focuses mostly on theory and proofs, not applications as Math 2522 does.
Section Expectation
Class time is likely to be spent lecturing, and students should expect to spend 6-8 hours a week outside of class time reviewing course material and working on homework assignments. We will use the book Linear algebra by Jim Hefferon (979-8362590277), which is available online free of charge or for purchase on Amazon and elsewhere online if you prefer a bound copy.
Evaluation
There will be weekly homework assignments, quizzes, and in-class exams.
