About LING 2560 A
Introduction to the syntax of natural languages and a rigorous approach to the analysis of sentence structure. Prerequisites: ANTH 1600 or LING 1500.

Section Description
The primary goal of this course is to facilitate the development of an understanding of sentence structure within the most influential paradigm in the field, universal grammar (UG). In order to develop knowledge about word order patterns, students will produce and collect datasets of naturally occurring language, and they will apply the analysis suggested by UG proponents to those sentences. Throughout the course, students will also be exposed to alternative ways of analyzing sentence structure and their implications for our understanding of overall human cognition. This class will attempt to follow a flipped classroom methodology in which students are assigned readings about theoretical constructs as homework and then they try to apply those concepts to actual language data in class in a workshop modality that will include group-work.
